The namesake of an iconic fighter jet

Celegin Viggen bears its name after another iconic Swedish fighter jet: SAAB AJS37 Viggen.

SAAB AJS37 Viggen, in service in the Swedish Air Force in the 1970’s to the 1990’s.
The airplane silhouette is found detailed embossed on the case back of Celegin VIggen. The Cockpit GMT version (ref. J37XC) also has the classic quote “No guts, no glory” inscribed – the up until now only non-Swedish words on any of our watches!

Our Viggen design goes back to when the first designs and concepts started to take place. In contrast to the Draken designs, the Viggen is based on the Type A pilot watch designs that became predominant in how aviation instrumentation in general was designed.

When making a Type A watch with a Swedish connection, the actual cockpit clock in Viggen offers a fantastic inspiration. The original cockpit clock had four hands, which inspired us to make the first Viggen watch model with the same. By means of the fourth hand, the Celegin Viggen Cockpit GMT offers the possibility to set a separate time zone in addition to the local time by the regular hour and minute hands. The fourth hand completes one turn per 24 hours and this is referred to as a GMT function.

“No guts, no glory”

Although we had different versions of our Celegin Viggen watch on the block, due to limited means we had to select one to prototype first. The obvious choice would have been a simpler model than one with the GMT function as the Sellita SW330 is a step up in terms of price.

However, in the spirit of wanting to honor the fighter jet – inspiration and namesake of the watch – the choice fell on the GMT-version. To spice it up, we also coated the watch with DLC-coating making it pitch black but with the steel surfaces apparent.

This choice involved more risk and financial commitment and a quote that was used by some of the Swedish fighter and test pilots in the 1990’s came to mind: “No guts, no glory”. This was exactly how we felt about this project and therefore we have made the exception to allow non-Swedish text on the watch and engrave this quote on the case back. (Other Celegin Viggen models won’t have this detail).
